Swaniti Talks with Dr. Ajoy Kumar

The Swaniti initiative in collaboration with Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University hosted “The Swaniti Talks” with Dr. Ajoy Kumar on the 13th of December, 2012 at the FMS campus. The topic of discussion was “Politics as a career: How should you pursue a career in politics?”. The talk was organized with the intention of raising political awareness and interest amongst the Indian youth. About forty enthusiastic students and working professionals interested in the domain of polity and governance attended this open event.

Dr. Ajoy Kumar is Member of Parliament from Jamshedpur and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Max Neeman International. He joined Max Neeman in 2005 from Apollo Hospitals where he was President, Operations. A former IPS officer of 1986 batch, Dr. Ajoy Kumar served as the Superintendent of Police in Jamshedpur (1994–96), after which he left the police service and moved to the corporate world. Dr. Kumar opened the session with a question: “How many of you are interested in politics?” What followed was a discussion on the importance of youth in revolutionizing the political system.

Dr. Kumar then continued with the story about his transition from being an IPS officer to a successful corporate executive. After being financially stable, he catapulted himself to national politics with the aim of bringing holistic development to both rural and urban sections of Jamshedpur. Dr. Kumar also strongly emphasized that being financially stable is a n important pre-requisite for entrance into the political sphere. He spoke about the various grassroots development projects that he had undertaken, including “Viklang Rath Yatra”, a drive for the differently-abled. Dr. Kumar has shed light upon his exhaustive efforts in engaging corporate and private resources in the public domain. Illustrating his words with a PowerPoint presentation, he proceeded to talk about his “Ponds for Livelihood” project in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Demonstrating how a simple project can change the lives of millions, he inspired the audience to critically question their contributions and role in the society.

Dr. Ajoy Kumar’s opening statement was followed by a dynamic Q&A session. Answering questions about dynasty politics, adherence to your political party’s views and stepping into the tricky world of politics, he captivated the audience with his oratory skills, sharp wit and frankness. The talk finally concluded with a breakout and networking session where Dr. Kumar interacted with the audience and two of the Swaniti Fellows on a one-on-one basis.
